The Four C’s of Your Diamond
Carat
Diamond carat weight, a key factor in determining size and value, is measured in carats, with one carat equaling 200 milligrams. Each carat is divided into 100 points, so a 0.25-carat diamond is a ‘twenty-five pointer.’ Diamonds over one carat are measured in carats and decimals, like a 1.08-carat diamond being ‘one point oh eight carats.’
Cut
The cut of a diamond is crucial for its brilliance and sparkle. It determines how well light is reflected through the stone, with grades ranging from Excellent to Poor. A high-quality cut ensures maximum brilliance and enhances both beauty and value, while a poor cut can diminish sparkle and overall appeal.
Color
Diamond color affects appearance and value, graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown) by the GIA. Colorless diamonds (D-F) are most valuable, offering the best brilliance. Near-colorless (G-J) balance quality and value, while K-M diamonds show more color but can still be appealing, especially in warmer settings.
Clarity
Diamond clarity, graded from Flawless (FL) to Included (I) by the GIA, measures imperfections. Flawless diamonds have no visible flaws, Internally Flawless have minor surface blemishes. VVS1 and VVS2 have tiny inclusions, VS1 and VS2 have minor ones, and SI1 and SI2 have noticeable inclusions. Included diamonds have obvious flaws affecting transparency and brilliance.
